Jazz Harmony

This is a very important subject from both, a performance and compositional point of view. It is imperative for a good musician, an arranger or a composer to be fluent with harmony.
Harmonic study helps the musicians to sound polished and well rounded professionals and give them the edge that pushes them to the better side of the thin line that divides the good and the best musicians.
We start with intervals, which form the basis of the harmonic study. The diatonic scales are play a very important role in the study as they provide as a basis of composition and improvisation throughout majority of the present music around the world.

It also acts as a platform to expand the study over the modal music, which is to be studied at the more advanced levels of Harmony. Voice movements, drop voicing, application of altered modes, modulation of harmony, parallelism, are some of the concepts to be studied. Concepts of horizontal or melodic harmonization and vertical harmonization are discussed in the advanced levels.  Some important topics of study also include embellishments, variations, and melodic decorations that enhance the performance quality. For the higher-level students the inner voicing and the harmonic analysis of sound movement are a must in today’s world of ever evolving jazz.
